The Night School for Deeper Learning (Series IX, Session I) with the Author of the Letter to the Ephesians

Our “special guest” for the first class of Series 9 is the author of the Letter to the Ephesians in the New Testament. It was written by an unknown author (though one profoundly influenced by St. Paul) sometime between 80-100 CE. It is attributed to St. Paul (a common practice in the ancient world), suggesting that he wrote it while in prison in Rome – 61-63 CE. The letter comprises only six chapters, but they express a vision of the whole meaning of God in the world, which is exceptionally beautiful. Francis Foulkes in his commentary writes: “In many respects Ephesians reads more like a sermon—in some parts more like a prayer or a mighty doxology—than a letter written to meet some special need in a church or group of churches. It is like a sermon on the greatest and widest theme possible for a Christian sermon—the eternal purpose of God which he is fulfilling through his Son Jesus Christ, and working out in and through the church…. The exposition of such a majestic divine purpose leads on to the challenge ‘to lead a life worthy of the calling’, and this not just in individual terms.”

And that last point, spoken of in this famous Letter, becomes the overarching theme of Series 9 of The Night School – “to lead a life worthy of the calling.”

This gathering will be held in your homes, meaning online via Zoom.  The class will be from 6-7pm (PST). Feel free to join us at 5:45pm for a brief social time before we begin.  Please RSVP below so that we can send you additional resources on the day of the gathering.

The Night School is an experience of deep thought. This spiritual exercise activates in those who attend a longing for more depth of life and cultivates in them a greater capacity to explore with intellect and feeling the profound riches of the deep Tradition. In each class, the group is introduced to a new “guest” who were/are profound thinkers or missionaries or musicians or architects or philosophers or painters or poets or theologians or mystics.  In sum, The Night School is meant to be enjoyable, even startling at times (surprised by the wisdom and beauty we have available to us when given a chance to experience it), and most of all to be an experience of God.
