What is God up to with you?
God is alive, and he is actively and skillfully at work in you.
What I’ve seen this year at the Institute is people coming to us with their hands full. Grief in one hand and gratitude in the other. Holding them out to us and saying, “Show me what to do with this.”
– Tara Ludwig, Faber Institute Spiritual Director
So we teach them. We teach them through the central habits of the institute, and through the art of friendship – how God can make them thicker, deeper, richer. How he’ll stretch them larger so their suffering does not go to waste, but instead makes them more fully awake and alive.”

How We Awaken and Deepen
We do this by putting people in touch with the sources of depth and vision within themselves through the various Habits of the Faber Institute.
– Habits of the Faber Institute –
habit [ hab-it ] /noun/ : an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become a customary practice or use
Pilgrim’s Door
Those who are new to the Institute, or seeking to get more involved, are welcomed at the Pilgrim’s Door by Tara Ludwig, Spiritual Director at the Faber Institute, who will assist in discerning what offerings of the Institute might best speak to what God is up to in them.
Spiritual Direction
This work of friendship in Christ is offered by a person (a “Director”) for the benefit of a person (a “Directee”) who is desiring greater insight into how God does friendship with him or her, according to his or her unique personality and through his or her everyday experiences. The goal of spiritual direction is for a directee to know God, and so to grow in his or her willingness to be taught directly by God through daily experiences.
Night School for Deeper Learning
The Night School is an adventurous exercise of greater depth and reflectivity than is normal for most people. Through these classes, our speaker welcomes into the gathering a profound thinker, explorer, philosopher, painter, poet, theologian or mystic from the ancient or nearer past.
Faber Sessions
The Faber Sessions are a series of classes that involve deep readings and conversation around great literature such as The Chronicles of Narnia, poetry and hymns.
Retreats
A Retreat is a sacred space and time set aside for those looking for a more serious (rather than casual) commitment to deepen their following of Christ, to keep themselves awake and learning in their spiritual and theological understanding.
Publications
We recommend you start your journey with the Faber Institute and experience what we do by joining one of our regular activities: The Night School for Deeper Learning or The Faber Sessions.
Over the course of our lives, we ask God to give us much and more. But I have learned that God’s typical response is to send us to each other. Through friendship with each other we will often be given what and more than we need. Through friendship, we may discover that the things that we had thought were essential to us are not; and things we have overlooked may suddenly become of great importance – just what we need.”
Rick Ganz, Faber Institute Founder and Executive Director
