What is Faber Consulting and Discernment?
Consulting and discernment is the art of helping a person cultivate a talent for making reasonable decisions about matters of significance in his or her life, and learning how to accept the fact that the making of a good decision entails the letting go of other good options.
The Faber Institute recognizes that we live in a culture where “having options” is judged of greater value than wanting persons to decide about the worth of one option, and then to commit themselves to it. Yet as long as we are persuaded to keep our options open, we for that amount of time remain undefined as persons.
A person becomes a person through the reasonable decisions he or she makes, and through which he or she commits his or her life. As Americans we have such an example of a reasonable decision, made with prudence and in consultation with others, in our Declaration of Independence, whose concluding line is: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”
