The Night School for Deeper Learning with Madeleine L’Engle (Series VIII, Part III)
May 18 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pmFree
The Night School is an experience of deep thought. This spiritual exercise activates in those who attend a longing for more depth of life and cultivates in them a greater capacity to explore with intellect and feeling the profound riches of the deep Tradition. In each class, the group is introduced to a new “guest” who were/are profound thinkers or missionaries or musicians or architects or philosophers or painters or poets or theologians or mystics.
Our “Guest” for Part 3 of Series 8 is will be Madeleine L’Engle (1918-2007), a Christian woman of impressive intellectual range, of fierce independence, who was generous with God, and a writer, thinker, and poet of renown. There is no question of the “mystical” element operating in her from her girlhood. This is particularly apparent in her poetry.
Something of her “voice” you can hear in this quote (below) from an essay she wrote called “Icons of the True”:
“How many of us really want life, life more abundant, life which does not promise any fringe benefits or early retirement plans? Life which does not promise the absence of pain, or love which is not vulnerable and open to hurt? The number of people who attempt to withdraw from life through the abuse of alcohol, tranquilizers, barbiturates is statistically shocking. How many of us dare to open ourselves to that truth which would make us free?” [L’Engle, Madeleine. Walking on Water (p. 40). The Crown Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.]
The work of hers that finally vaulted her into national notice was A Wrinkle in Time (1962 – a book rejected 26 times by publishers before finally published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux), which over the years became the Time Quintet (five books). So far, these books have sold 10 million copies all over the world. That Quintet will be the topic of The Faber Sessions sometime in our future.
But the focus of The Night School on May 18th will be on the poetry of this remarkable Christian.
