The Night School for Deeper Learning (Series X, Session I) with John the Apostle
January 18 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pmFree
For Session I, our Guest is John the Apostle, one of the sons of Zebedee, “the disciple whom Jesus loved”, author of the Fourth Gospel, and the man strongly associated with the Letters I, II, and III of John. This “association” expresses the fact that these three Letters never claim that John is their author. But as the outstanding biblical scholar Raymond Brown, SS has it: “The closest links of the Johannine Epistles are to the Fourth Gospel.”
The Fourth Gospel was published sometime between 90 CE and 150 CE. It has been impossible for scholars to settle on a specific date of its publication, let alone on the specific decade during which it was published after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (33 CE), and after the deaths of nearly all of the Apostles, including Saints Peter and Paul (martyred in Rome sometime between 62 and 64 CE). Traditionally we understand it to have been published in Ephesus (in Asia Minor), the last known home of both John and Mary, Jesus’ mother.
The First Letter of John was composed and published sometime long enough after the publication of the Fourth Gospel for there to have arisen disputes about what the Fourth Gospel meant when it describes Jesus as it does.
In our time together, we will watch John and the way he mediates a serious division that had arisen in the “Johannine Community” concerning the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ. This misunderstanding is one that among Christians today continues to need correcting with a serene and confident teaching.
We conclude that the author of the First Letter is an elderly man, long a follower of Jesus Christ and a man profoundly effected in his understanding of Jesus by John the Apostle. Some of the most beautiful teaching ever offered us appear in this short Letter: teachings about the love of God, about the “divisions” that divine Love creates in a fallen world, about friendship, and about the discernment of spirits.
