Night School for Deeper Learning with Job, from the Book of Job (Series VIII, Part II)
March 16 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pmFree
The Night School is an experience of deep thought. This spiritual exercise activates in those who attend a longing for more depth of life and cultivates in them a greater capacity to explore with intellect and feeling the profound riches of the deep Tradition. In each class, the group is introduced to a new “guest” who were/are profound thinkers or missionaries or musicians or architects or philosophers or painters or poets or theologians or mystics.
Our “Guest” for Part 2 of Series 8 is Job of the Book of Job. The Book of Job is a biblical book of poetry placed within the third major division of the Hebrew Bible – the Torah and the Prophets and the Writings. One scholar speaks of this treasure of world literature in this way:
R. H. Pfeiffer, IOT, 1948, pp. 683f., says very well: “If our poet ranks with the greatest writers of mankind, as can hardly be doubted, his creative genius did not of necessity rely on earlier models for the general structure of his work.… We may regard it as one of the most original works in the poetry of mankind. So original in fact that it does not fit into any of the standard categories devised by literary criticism … it is not exclusively lyric nor epic poetry … nor dramatic … nor didactic nor reflective … unless the poem is cut down to fit a particular category.’ [H. L. Ellison, “Job, Book Of,” ed. D. R. W. Wood et al., New Bible Dictionary (Leicester, England; Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1996), 590.]
Though this profound work concerns a conversation (very important to notice this) among SIX characters – God, Satan, Job, and Job’s three complicated friends – for this Night School, we will welcome as our Guest the man Job himself.
Please RSVP below. This class will be held online via Zoom.
